Journey to Craft

Rooted Beginnings

Hello, I'm Thomas Sullivan, the heart and hands behind Sulliwood. My journey into woodcraft began in the 1980s with an enlightening trip to Japan. There, I was fortunate enough to work alongside the skilled “Sukiya” carpenters, masters of building traditional Japanese tea rooms. Witnessing their artistry in blending natural materials into spaces of simple elegance sparked a lifelong passion for woodworking in me. It was an experience that showed me how wood, in its many forms, could be transformed into spaces and objects of profound beauty and serenity.
Philosophy and Practice

The Artisan's Way

After four decades in construction, touching everything from structural framing to finish carpentry, I found my true calling in wood turning with the acquisition of my first wood lathe in 2005. This marked a pivot to focus wholly on creating artful, usable items from wood, transforming what was once a hobby into my life's work.

My craftsmanship is guided by a simple ethos: slow, methodical work that ensures the highest quality from the first attempt. In every piece, I strive to showcase the natural beauty of wood, allowing its inherent characteristics to shine through.
